Over the weekend of January 16/17, Karate Canada sent a delegation of
21 athletes to participate in the Paris Open, one of the premiere karate tournaments
in the world. Accompanied by coaches Manuel Monzon and Paul Oliver and the
president, Ms. Rebecca Khoury, the team performed very well and maintained
a great team spirit throughout.
A huge congratulations goes to Véronique Leblanc, who captured a bronze medal
in the women's -55 kgs weight division. This is the first European medal for
Véronique, and it capped a great performance at the Paris Open. As you can
see from the photo included, Rebecca Khoury had the privilege of giving Véronique
her medal during the awards ceremony.
Bravo Véronique!!

over that weekend:
- Roxanne Côté, 5th place.
- Chris De Sousa Costa, 5th place.

It is with great pride that Karate Canada informs you that Kevin Caouette, a member of Karate Quebec, was chosen to carry the Olympic Flame in his home region of Gaspé on November 10th. A gold medallist at the Canadian Championships and a silver medallist at the Panamerican Junior Championships in 2008, he was forced to stop competing last year due to an injury. He has returned to the competition circuit this year, and Karate Canada congratulations him on being selected to carry the Olympic Flame in his home region.

The WKF World Junior, Cadet and under 21 Championships are done, and
we would like to thank the members of the Canadian delegation
for their hard work and dedication! Each of the 18 athletes deserves
a round of applause for committing to the national team for the
Panamerican Junior Championships as well as the World Junior Championships. In
particular, we would like to highlight the following performances:
1. Kamille Desjardins (QC), 5th place
2. Katie Campbell (NB), 9th place
3. Terry Williams (QC), 9th place
In addition, coaches Paul Oliver, Gary Sebean and Louis-Philippe
L'Écuyer Lafleur (who doubled as the team physiotherapist) get our
thanks
for their non-stop work before, during and after this tournament. A
final thank you goes out to the Canadian referees who rounded out the delegation:
1. Norma Foster
2. Don Mazerolle
3. Yaro Tarana
4. Zvonko Celebija
5. Brian James
This concludes the competitive year for Karate Canada's athletes. The
